XYSCO Sickle Cell Foundation Leads Powerful Awareness Campaign at KNUST SHS with Support from KATH Nurses
In commemoration of World Sickle Cell Day, XYSCO Sickle Cell Foundation successfully organized a major sickle cell awareness campaign at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Senior High School (KNUST SHS) in Kumasi.
The program, themed “Know Your Genotype – Break the Cycle of Sickle Cell Disease,” was an initiative of XYSCO Foundation aimed at educating students on sickle cell prevention and the importance of genotype testing.
To strengthen the medical component of the campaign, nurses from the Family Medicine Directorate of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), under the leadership of Miss Catherine Akyamaah Korankye Eastwood, partnered with the Foundation to provide professional health education and practical guidance.

Educating the Next Generation
The awareness seminar brought together students, teachers, health professionals, and youth advocates in a unified effort to address sickle cell prevention among young people.
Nurses from KATH delivered comprehensive presentations on:
- Understanding sickle cell disease
- Genetic inheritance patterns
- The importance of knowing one’s genotype before marriage
- Preventive strategies for future families
Interactive discussions, testimonies, and Q&A sessions allowed students to actively engage and seek clarity on important health issues.
XYSCO’s Commitment to Prevention
Founder of XYSCO Sickle Cell Foundation, Mr. Francis Nyame Sarkodie, emphasized the Foundation’s commitment to taking sickle cell education to schools and communities across Ghana.
“Our mission is simple — educate early, prevent suffering, and empower young people with knowledge. When students know their genotype, they are better prepared to protect their future families.”
The Foundation continues to prioritize youth-centered advocacy as a key strategy in reducing preventable sickle cell births.

School’s Appreciation
Authorities at KNUST SHS expressed appreciation to XYSCO Foundation and the supporting medical team from KATH for bringing such vital education directly to the students.
The event concluded with students pledging to:
- Know their genotype status
- Promote awareness among peers
- Encourage responsible health decisions
Strengthening Community Health Outreach
The collaboration between XYSCO Sickle Cell Foundation and the nurses from KATH reflects the importance of partnerships in advancing public health education.
The program marks another milestone in XYSCO’s ongoing High School Awareness Campaign aimed at building a healthier, informed generation.
